SUBSTANCE ABUSE TREATMENT

What is substance abuse?

Substance abuse occurs when an individual uses substance(s) in a manner that negatively impacts their life. We commonly see clients who abuse substances such as: alcohol, opiates, cocaine, amphetamines, benzodiazepines, marijuana, and hallucinogens. A common misconception is that if a substance is legal or prescribed by a doctor that it cannot be abused. Any mind-altering substance has the potential to be abused and can lead an individual into addiction.

Often an addict will place their substance ahead of the welfare of themselves and others. Families are destroyed, jobs are lost, health will suffer, and legal consequences can arise. Addiction is a progressive disease and left untreated it will inevitably get worse. Unfortunately, in far too many cases the addict dies from their addiction before they find substance abuse treatment.

We look at the usage behaviours and reasons for using the substance when we assess clients. In our experience, almost all addicts have experienced trauma in their past. Addicts use substances as a coping mechanism to numb themselves from their pain. Addiction becomes a life of chaos and often the individual suffering feels trapped and does not know where to turn for help.
